Augsburg 2 - 1 VfB Stuttgart: Augsburg enhance European hopes

Augsburg strengthened their claim for a place in the Europa League next season, moving five points clear of seventh-placed Hoffenheim thanks to a 2-1 win over Stuttgart which leaves their Swabian rivals inside the bottom two.

Tobias Werner gave Augsburg the lead before Daniel Ginczek levelled against the run of play.

Stuttgart had chances to take the lead but were punished by Raul Bobadilla's winner in the 73rd minute, falling to another defeat which leaves them in the relegation zone with just five games now to save themselves.

Stuttgart came into the game having seen the three teams above them in the standings all lose but it looked like they would be going the same way after Augsburg stormed into a seventh-minute lead.

Sven Ulreich came racing out of his area to head the ball away from Bobadilla, but his clearance found Alexander Esswein.

As the Stuttgart goalkeeper went to ground, Esswein swung the ball in for Werner to turn in to the unguarded goal.

The hosts continued to attack well with Werner put through on goal in the 17th minute but he was stopped in his tracks by the offside flag.

Stuttgart were under pressure but they grabbed an equaliser out of nothing with Filip Kostic teeing up Ginczek to score at the far post.

Ginczek had the chance to turn the game on its head before half-time when he had only Marwin Hitz to beat but the Swiss goalkeeper made a good block.

Although Stuttgart missed their chances to go in front, they were by this stage on top and in full control, unlike in the opening 20 minutes of the game, and it looked more like it would be they rather than Augsburg who would craft a winner.

Just like how Stuttgart levelled against the run of play, it was Augsburg's turn to tear up the form book to regain their advantage with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Ulreich only parried a Daniel Baier effort and Markus Feulner picked up the loose ball, sending it across for Bobadilla to convert from close range.

Stuttgart sent men forward in the search for an equaliser, allowing Augsburg to find gaps on the counter-attack which they nearly took to wrap up the win, but they did enough to hold on to all three points.
