Turkish police arrest two people over armed attack on Fenerbahce team bus
Fenerbahce said they would not play any matches until the people responsible for the gun attack were caught.

Turkish police have detained two people suspected of involvement in an attack on a bus that was carrying Fenerbahce players.

The bus was shot at on Saturday near the northern city of Trabzon during the team’s return to the airport from a 5-1 win against Caykur Rizespor. The driver was hit in the face and hospitalised.

The governor of Trabzon, Abdil Celil Oz, said the two suspects – one aged 37 and the other 27 – were detained early on Tuesday. He said one of them is believed to have followed the convoy while the other fired shots at the bus.

Fenerbahce said they would not play any matches until those responsible for the attack were caught.

The Turkish football federation has reacted to the incident by suspending Super Lig and Turkish Cup matches for a week.

“We believe the incident was a terrorist attack, targeting not only Fenerbahce but Turkish sports. We decided to postpone all league and cup games for a week,” the federation chairman, Yildirim Demiroren, said. “We took this decision because we attach importance to the players’ psychology.”
