Wayne Rooney: Captain warns Manchester United ahead of Villa game

Wayne Rooney has warned Manchester United they cannot let their good work at Anfield go to waste when they play Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United signed off for the international break with a 2-1 away win over Liverpool - thanks to Juan Mata's brace – to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

They are now sitting pretty in fourth place in the table, five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, and look on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

However, Rooney is well aware how quickly things can change, admitting nothing less than victory will suffice against Villa.

"Yes it was (a six-pointer at Liverpool), but that means nothing if we don't beat Aston Villa on Saturday," the United captain said."

"Obviously Arsenal play Liverpool as well, so if we can get the win against Villa that will be an even better result than Liverpool was for us."

"I think there are still eight games left. We are in a good position at the minute so it's in our own hands, so have to make sure we do it."
