Wild brawl forces game to be abandoned

An Italian lower league football derby had to be abandoned after a wild brawl broke out in the tunnel.

Local Sicilian and Serie D rivals Vittoria and Paterno were heading back to the sheds after the referee stopped the game due to violent clashes on the pitch.

But tensions quickly escalated as the players headed up the tunnel with an ugly all-in brawl breaking out.

Footage of the incident shows the footballers coming up the tunnel before words are exchanged and players begin to push and shove each other.

The fighting intensifies as players from both sides throw themselves into the melee, wildly swinging and kicking at one another.

The fight is eventually broken up but not before one Paterno player was rushed to hospital with chest injuries.

After the brawl, the referee called a halt to the game, with both teams given a 3-0 defeat, while the Italian football governing body handed out 59 suspensions – 36 to Vittoria, seen in white, and 23 to Paterno.

The clubs were also issued an $845 fine but it is reported both clubs are willing to fight the sentences handed down.
