Michael Carrick signs one-year extension to Manchester United contract

Michael Carrick has signed a one-year contract extensions with Manchester United.

The midfielder was out of contract in the summer but will now remain at Old Trafford until at least 2016, confirmed the club.

The news is not entirely surprising given Carrick's last contract extension which tied him down to the club until 2015 had the option to extend it a further year.

The 33-year-old joined the club in the summer of 2006 from Tottenham Hotspur and has gone on to make 376 appearances and score 23 goals - including his header last week against Spurs.

During his time with the club he's won an incredible haul of silverware including: five Premier League trophies, a Champions League winners medal, a League Cup, a Fifa Club World Cup and five Community shields.

However, Carrick has struggled to remain as a starting member of the Manchester United squad since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson but was recently named vice-captain by Louis van Gaal and seen his first-team prospects improve.

The midfielder was called up to Roy Hodgson's latest England squad on Thursday.
