Exit door: Manchester United are rumoured to be willing to let Angel Di Maria leave

Are the Old Trafford days of English football's record signing Ángel Di María drawing to a close before he even chalks up a year at Manchester United? It certainly seems to be the verdict of most newspaper transfer gossip columns on Sunday morning. Picking up on Louis van Gaal's apparent exasperation with the Argentina winger and his own failure to settle in England, something that has been exacerbated by the burglary at his home, the Sunday Express leads the way by saying that United have seen enough and are willing to cash in. Di Maria, too, has been so unnerved by the robbery that he has moved his family into a city centre flat rented from Phil Neville. With his future uncertain, United hope that Paris Saint-Germain's interest in the architect of Real Madrid's 10th European Cup final victory last summer will be rekindled.

Once bitten, twice shy, for United with Real Madrid wingers? Don't be daft. If they manage to offload Di María, and perhaps even if they don't, their principal summer target remains Gareth Bale, who, several newspapers report has still to be taken to the Bernabéu's heart.

However, should United not be able to tempt Real to part with the world's costliest player for an even bigger fee than the one that took him there from White Hart Lane, Van Gaal will turn to a player he knows well from his days as Holland manager. Van Gaal gave PSV winger Memphis Depay his international debut, used him to great impact during the World Cup and there were rumours last summer that the player was desperate to join Van Gaal in the Premier League. He was persuaded that another year at PSV would be better for his development but the time looks ripe for Depay to join his mentor this summer.

Sporting's William Carvalho, who ranks behind only Paul Pogba as the moost coveted central midfielder in Europe at the moment, is finally ready to leave Lisbon and move to England, reports the Mail. It will take £35 million to prise him away. If they manage to pull it off, that could spell the end of Michael Carrick's decade at United. AC Milan, kicking themselves for letting Andrea Pirlo go too early, are willing to give the Wallsend metronome a new home even if he will be 34 at the start of next season.

All that scouting to assess whether Kevin Strootman is back to his best has brought an unexpected bonus after the Dutch midfielder broke down again. United have taken a fancy to another Roma midfielder - Radja Nainggolan, a Belgian who changes his hairstyle as frequently as Mario Balotelli. They will have to beat Manchester City and Liverpool to sign the 26-year-old, who will cost as much as £29 million but Roma will first have to sort out his co-ownership status with Cagliari.

It wouldn't be Sunday without a report that Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels is still on United's radar. You want some flesh on those bones? We can't help, I'm afraid, just the same old 'linked with' non-attributable quotes. The same goes for Chelsea's long-standing interest in Real Madrid's France centre-half Raphaël Varane who is now, according to the Star, firmly in United's sights.

The certainty that Burnley's Danny Ings is heading to Anfield in the summer when his contract expires is ready to be tested by Van Gaal, who is keen on the former Bournemouth striker. The free transfer would represent a saving of £43 million on Radamel Falcao, money that could be invested elsewhere.

With Strootman out of the picture, one beneficiary of the Falaco dividend could be Bayer Leverkusen who might be tempted at last to part with midfielder Lars Bender. It would take £12m and comes with the added bonus of putting Arsène Wenger's nose out of joint if Bender joins the long list Wenger was interested in but couldn't sign: Cristiano Ronaldo, Di María, Lionel Messi, Ferenc Puskas, the Dave Clark Five and Pele.
