Colchester remain deep in relegation trouble after losing 2-1 at Rochdale.
However, despite the defeat, the U's lost no ground in the fight for survival at the bottom of League One and stay two points adrift of safety.
Rochdale went in front in the sixth minute when midfielder Rhys Bennett headed home from close range after Joe Bunney had flicked on Michael Rose's cross. Ian Henderson went close to doubling the lead but nodded wide at the near post.
Sammie Szmodics' long-range effort tested home goalkeeper Jamie Jones but Colchester were second best for much of the first half.
Rochdale extended their advantage 10 minutes into the second half when Henderson fired home from inside the penalty area but the U's quickly reduced the deficit through Chris Porter's spot-kick after Rose had fouled Gavin Massey.
Substitute Macauley Bonne came close to an equalising goal when his low drive was pushed away by Jones.
