Augsburg got their push for a place in Europe back on track by becoming the first side to beat Wolfsburg in 2015.

Dominik Kohr scored the only goal of the game as the Bavarians ran out 1-0 winners against a side who, with a deficit of 11 points now on league leaders Bayern Munich, realistically saw their slim title hopes ended.

Dieter Hecking's men may now concentrate their efforts on sealing a place in the Champions League next season and focus on beating Inter Milan to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Wolfsburg showed the confidence they have garnered from taking 16 points out of six games since the winter break - more than any other side in the Bundesliga this year - by taking the game to their hosts.

Augsburg had identified the danger in Bas Dost, though, and the Wolves were unable to get the ball through to the man who had scored nine goals in his last four games.

He is not the only threat Wolfsburg have, however, and Kevin De Bruyne took a few sighters on Marwin Hitz's goal with Luiz Gustavo following suit.

Augsburg's tactics of keeping their guests at a safe distance was working, though, while they nearly snatched the lead just before the break on the counter-attack with Tobias Werner heading narrowly wide.

When Dost finally lost his marker early in the second half, he hit the inside of the post with his shot, although the flag was raised anyway.

It was a warning which Augsburg heeded, however, as they started to attack a little more, earning a penalty after an hour when Naldo committed a foul on Rahman Baba inside the penalty area.

Although Diego Benaglio saved Werner's spot-kick, the ball fell for Kohr, who converted the rebound to give Augsburg the lead.

Wolfsburg continued to struggle in their attempts to find a way through the Augsburg defence and when they did manage it, Robin Knoche's headed goal was ruled out for a foul.

There was ultimately no way through as Augsburg held on to their first win in five to strengthen their claim to a place in Europe next season.
