Freiburg vs Werder Bremen preview - Petersen to miss big reunion

Nils Petersen will miss Freiburg's game against his former club Werder Bremen due to injury, but he is nevertheless looking forward to the Dreisamstadion encounter.

Petersen made the move from Bremen to Freiburg during the winter break and marked his debut in some style with a hat-trick.

Soon after, though, he picked up a knee injury which will sideline him for a total of six weeks, including this weekend when his present meets his past.

"I would have loved to be involved, but it's a bit too soon for me yet," Petersen told werder.de.

"I'll be in the stadium, though, and can't wait to see them. We desperately need three points in our relegation battle."

Petersen left Bremen when they were just two points above Freiburg, but still inside the bottom three.

Two months on, eight points separate the two clubs with Freiburg still in relegation danger but Bremen, according to Petersen, no longer at risk of going down.

"They've got 30 points in the bank and that's what it comes down to," he said. "I think anybody here in Freiburg would love to trade places with Bremen.

"Werder are a good example to teams in the bottom half of the table, that you just need to put a good run together and you can soon be out of danger. Werder can be proud of that."

It may help Freiburg, then, that three of their next four games come at home, where they won against Cologne in the DFB-Pokal in midweek, and that Bremen's midweek cup defeat means they have now lost two in a row.

"You could say that Werder come at just the right time for us," Petersen said. "On the other hand, Werder are going to be like a wounded fighter.

"It's going to be a decisive game for both sides."

In Petersen's absence, Admir Mehmedi will lead the Freiburg attack and he is the man Bremen coach Viktor Skripnik is keen on stopping.

"He's got a lot of quality and is somebody who can decide games," said Skripnik, who is expecting a reaction from his side to their defeat to third-division Arminia Bielefeld in the cup.

"I expect improvements in every department," he said. "Everybody must understand the situation and analyse it correctly."
