Werder Bremen 3 : 5 Wolfsburg - Wolfsburg hit back for dramatic win

Wolfsburg refused to lie down as they inflicted the first defeat of the new year on Werder Bremen with a stunning 5-3 away win on Sunday.

Bremen led three times through Zlatko Junuzovic, Franco Di Santo and a Vieirinha own goal, but Wolfsburg replied through Daniel Caligiuri and Maximilian Arnold before the on-fire Bas Dost netted his 10th and 11th goals of 2015 to turn the game around.

He then teed up Caligiuri to add a fifth for the Wolves as they picked up all three points in a dramatic encounter.

The goalscoring started immediately with Junuzovic turning in Levan Oztunali's pass after only nine minutes, but Caligiuri levelled within 60 seconds to silence the Weserstadion.

Bremen regained the lead when Oztunali again provided the ball from the right which Di Santo placed past Diego Benaglio at his near post.

Wolfsburg's reaction took a little longer this time, with two minutes required before Arnold turned in Kevin De Bruyne's cross.

An own goal from Vieirinha, who would have been better off leaving Felix Kroos' shot rather than diverting it into his own goal, gave Bremen the lead for the third time with the fifth goal of the game, all within 28 minutes.

The goalscoring then stopped for the next 15 minutes, but started again early in the second half when Dost got in on the act.

De Bruyne was the provider for two almost carbon copy goals in the space of as many minutes, with the Dutchman first levelling and then putting the Wolves in front.

Only three more minutes passed before Dost lifted the ball towards the goal again, with Caligiuri ensuring it went in as Jannik Vestergaard retreated.

That proved to be the last of the goals, even though Junuzovic almost netted a second own goal of the game, not that Wolfsburg needed any such favours.

They picked up another victory to return to eight points behind Bayern Munich but, more importantly, 10 ahead of third-placed Borussia Monchengladbach, with a return to the Champions League next season now looking increasingly likely for Dieter Hecking's men.
