Louis van Gaal: US tour to blame for Manchester United injuries

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States is to blame for their horrendous luck with injuries in the first half of the season.

Players such as Michael Carrick, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young have all spent a significant amount of time on the treatment table during this campaign.

United’s luck appears to have changed however as Carrick is now the club’s only injured player but things can change with one game so he won't be taking United's current situation for granted.

Van Gaal feels the US tour inadequately prepared his players for the season ahead. Speaking about the team’s injuries, van Gaal said: ”We have always ten or 11 players injured. Now in the last few months we have had one or two players injured, which is a big difference.

"The way of training, the players have to adapt to that and that has also completed.

"That's the difference from the beginning, we also can’t forget that the American tour was not good preparation.”

United have not had a fully fit squad this season with over 50 separate injuries affecting the team.

The situation developed into something of a epidemic as United headed into Christmas but fans will be relieved to see a number of players come back into the fore.

Young recently made his return from a hamstring injury while Robin van Persie and Phil Jones have both been passed fit to play Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.
