John Terry hopeful over new Chelsea contract

John Terry has played in 34 of Chelsea's 29 fixtures this season

John Terry has confirmed he wants to stay at Chelsea and is hopeful the club will offer him a new contract in the summer.

The 34-year-old former England captain sees his current deal expire at the end of the season and has admitted he is yet to hold talks over an extension.

Terry, who has started 34 of the Blues' 39 games in all competition this season, conceded the club have more important players to tie down before they can decide on his future.

The centre-half said: "No talks have happened yet but the club know my position. Hopefully I know theirs and it will get done."

"I think we both respect the position. There are a lot more important players to sort out. Eden Hazard has just signed a new contract and, for me, that's the most important for the club."

"I want to stay and hopefully my performances are showing that, and they can keep me."

Terry was forced to wait until days before his previous contract expired last summer to sign a year-long extension, and watched long-term teammates Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole be forced to leave when theirs expired.

Terry admitted: "I was maybe a little bit nervous and edgy last season.

"I will be happy to get one more year and then see how it goes. I am taking it year-by-year. I haven't got much choice."

"I don't want a rest. I am coming toward the end of my career so it's important I'm playing as much as I can and stay fit."

Terry is a product of Chelsea's academy and has made over 600 appearances for the club since his debut in 1998, scoring 63 goals.

The defender won 78 caps for England but announced his retirement in 2012 after being overlooked by manager Roy Hodgson.
