Former Tottenham chief Sugar issues Kane warning amid Real Madrid interest

Lord Alan Sugar insists Tottenham would be powerless to stop Harry Kane leaving the club if he had his head turned by a club like Real Madrid.

The Spurs striker has been in superb form this season, scoring 23 goals in all competitions for the north London club.

The 21-year-old agreed a new five-and-a-half-year with the club earlier in the year, but reports emerged earlier this week that La Liga side Madrid are interested in his services.

And former chairman Sugar believes, should the forward have his head turned by the Spanish giants like Gareth Bale, the club could do little to retain the hitman.

"You don't have to accept any sort of money for a player," he told the Sports Bar. "The big issue people miss out is the untenable pressure that is placed upon a club when a player wants to leave. Then the money becomes irrelevant."

"In the case of Gareth Bale there must have been conversations where Tottenham said, 'If it's down to money, then let's have a chat'. It wasn't that though, he was given the chance to play for Real Madrid."

"That's why most players leave, just look at Michael Carrick, Dimitar Berbatov and Luka Modric."

"Harry Kane allegedly says he wants to be at the club for the rest of his life, like Matt Le Tissier at Southampton. Let us hope he is but let's be under no illusion. He will be the one that controls that."
