LOUIS VAN GAAL was not impressed with Manchester United’s performance despite his team avoiding another FA Cup scare against Cambridge – then said this is the club’s best chance of a trophy.

Goals by Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo and James Wilson earned United a fifth-round trip to Preston. But Van Gaal was not impressed.

"We didn’t play a very good match but it’s always difficult against a defensive team.

"We gave them a chance in the first minute and it was shaking moment,” he said.

"We did what we had to and now face Preston – but that won’t be easy either.

"This competition is the greatest chance to win a trophy, not only for me but for the players.

"We are the highest ranked team in the competition so we must have a chance to win it.

"I have won a title in my first season every where I have worked and I want to do the same here.”

Midfielder Marouane Fellaini underlined United’s determination to end an 11-year wait to win the FA Cup, saying: “It’s important to win a trophy so we will try, we work hard for that. We are winning at the moment but we continue to work hard.

"We win 3-0 which is good for confidence. We played well.”

Cambridge manager Richard Money said: “I was really pleased with them second half. To come in 2-0 down and play with purpose and control is not easy but we did that.

"We gave the ball away too cheaply in the first half. But I couldn’t fault them for their organisation and work ethic.

"I said at half time what’s the worst that can happen? You get battered? But so what. So go and show what you can do.

"I’m not sure how many clear chances they really created. They caught us on the counter-attack but we wanted to get bodies up the pitch.

"I just wanted to get a goal for the fans. And I thought we had at the end.

"But they gave everything we wanted them to give and we must use it to keep roaring as a group and as a team and as a club.

"Let’s get ourselves safe and stable then go again. We now have a big game on Saturday.”
