Bordeaux 1 : 1 Guingamp - Bordeaux far from vintage

Bordeaux were held 1-1 by Guingamp in their Ligue 1 clash at Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas, a result which does little to their chances of qualifying for Europe.

Mid-table Guingamp took the lead after 28 minutes through Claudio Beauvue before the home side levelled after 55 minutes through Maxime Poundje.

And their chances of forcing a winner were dealt a major blow when Jaroslav Plasil saw red towards the end.

The result means Bordeaux are seventh, six points behind fourth-placed Saint Etienne.

In what was a relatively quiet start to the game both sides had half chances inside the opening 15 minutes but both Bordeaux's Diego Rolan and the visitors' Thomas Giresse both failed to make the most of shooting opportunities from inside the area.

Soon after Cedric Carrasso was called into action in the hosts' goal after Beauvue picked out Christophe Mandanne but his first time volley was expertly turned away by the experienced goalkeeper.

Then, just before the half hour mark, Guingamp broke the deadlock in impressive fashion.

Jeremy Pied tricked himself some space on the right before delivering to the in-form Beauvue whose first-time volley on the turn beat the surprised Carrasso just inside the right post.

The visitors had a perfect opportunity to double their lead before the break when Mandanne burst through on goal but Carrasso came out well to block the former Dijon striker's effort.

Bordeaux chucked on Nicolas Maurice-Belay at the interval in an effort to get back in the game and he almost made an immediate impact but his drive from the edge of the area fizzed just the wrong side of the upright.

However, with 10 minutes, played in the second half, Willy Sagnol's side clawed their way back into the match following a sprightly start to the second-half.

Poundje picked up 40 yards out and, after a darting run, his speculative 20-yard drive beat Jonas Lossl with the aid of huge Angoua Brou deflection.

Guingamp offered a response and only a telling Nicolas Pallois deflection took Giresse's effort wide of the post.

Bordeaux's chances of an all-important second goal appeared to disappear with little over 10 minutes left when Plasil was shown a straight red for arguing with referee Sebastian Desage.

Despite that setback, Sagnol's side almost took the lead moments later but Angoua was on hand to head off the line after Rolan beat Lossl in the Guingamp goal as the hosts settled for a disappointing point.b
