Stade Rennais FC 1 : 4 Caen - Caen stun Rennes to ease worries

Caen climbed off the bottom of the Ligue 1 table by producing a shock 4-1 victory at Rennes.

The Normandy side had propped up the standings for much of the season following their promotion but, after putting four past Reims last week, they put mid-table Rennes to the sword by the same scoreline.

Sloan Privat's early opener at the Stade de la Route de Lorient was cancelled out by Benjamin Andre but Rennes had no answer to second-half goals from Lenny Nangis, Julien Feret and Damien Da Silva.

Caen seemingly had not read the script before kick-off and the team who are now 18th in the table and one point from safety took the lead with their first real attack.

Feret saw an initial poor corner cleared but the veteran winger was given a second opportunity to deliver and he duly picked out Privat to finish with aplomb, leaving Benoit Costil with little chance.

The hosts almost offered an instant response but Pedro Henrique's touch let him down when through on goal and the Brazilian was forced to shoot from distance to little effect.

However, on the 15-minute mark, Philippe Montanier's side clawed their way back into the game.

Christian Bruls found space and, despite his cutback not finding Henrique, Andre was allowed the freedom of the Caen box and he passed the ball beyond Remy Vercoutre to level.

The hosts went close again with a little over 30 minutes on the clock when Romain Danze found Ola Toivonen with a perfectly-placed cross but the former PSV Eindhoven striker could only head wide.

Despite the two early goals, both sides were struggling to create any real chances of note until five minutes after the restart when Caen took full advantage of a rare opportunity.

Feret's brilliantly weighted pass released Nangis through and goal and he rounded Costil before finishing from a tight angle to restore the visitors' advantage.

The hosts' had to wait until the 75th minute to fashion a real goalscoring opportunity but, when they chance came their way, Danze was unable to beat Vercoutre from close range.

It was not proving to be Rennes' evening and, even when Philippe Hosiner did manage to beat Vercoutre with a well-taken header, the ball cannoned against the crossbar.

And their misery was compounded when Caen added two goals late on.

Firstly, Feret intercepted a poor defensive ball before running half the length of the pitch and rounding Costil before passing the ball into an empty net.

Then, with less than a minute of normal time to play, Da Silva scored the goal of the game after collecting the ball before controlling it and dispatching a stunning effort into the top corner.
