Sir Alex Ferguson believes Man United are heading back to the top of English football

SIR ALEX FERGUSON says Manchester United are heading back to the top of English football.

The former champions have been knocked off their perch following Fergie’s decision to retire as boss in 2013.

United’s decision to replace him with David Moyes was disaster and he was sacked after just 10 months in charge.

The Old Trafford outfit finished seventh last season in seventh place and after failing to secure European qualification they appointed Louis van Gaal in a bid to restore their fortunes.

The Dutchman was given millions to spend on new stars and broke the British transfer record by signing Angel di Maria from Real Madrid in a £60m deal.

Despite suffering horrendous injury problems since arriving, Van Gaal has led United to third in the table following a seven match unbeaten run that included six straight wins.

Fergie reckons United will be the team to beat once again once van Gaal has a full squad to choose from.

The Scot, speaking to Clare Balding for a BT Sport Christmas Day Special, ‘Clare Balding Meets’, said: “First of all, Louis van Gaal, I don’t know how he can expect to get the best results with the injuries he’s had.

"And when he gets the best players back, you watch United, because he’s a great coach, he’ll do well.”

Fergie reckons van Gaal’s new signings still need time to settle in and has singled out established stars Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Michael Carrick and David de Gea for special praise.

"They’ve still got great players. I think Michael Carrick is the best central midfield player in English football. I think he’s the best English player in the game.

"I think Robin Van Persie, the World Cup maybe took a little bit out of him, but you watch him in the second half (of the season), he’ll be fine.

"Rooney is back flying and Rooney will always get you a goal and that’s always an advantage when a team has got a goal scorer in a team.

"And the one that’s most pleasing to me of the present lot is David de Gea.

"When we bought him he was a kid. He was skinny, but he had an ability.

"He’s got special talents - and it’s shown. Once they get the players back they’ll be fine.”

Sir Alex Ferguson was speaking to Clare Balding as part of a BT Sport Christmas Day double-bill of ‘Clare Balding Meets’ which features exclusive interviews with Sir Alex and Jose Mourinho. Watch the full interviews on BT Sport 1 from 3.30pm on December 25th.
