SC Freiburg 2 : 2 Hannover 96 - Hannover rally to earn draw

Freiburg let a two-goal lead slip to draw 2-2 against Hannover and remain rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga for the winter, allowing Borussia Dortmund to breathe a small sigh of relief on Sunday evening.

Goals from Mike Frantz and Marc-Oliver Kempf put Christian Streich's men on course for all three points, abut Leonardo Bittencourt made things interesting in the final seven minutes and Joselu snatched the Reds a point in stoppage time.

The draw means Freiburg remain with Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Stuttgart and Hamburg holding their positions in what nevertheless looks an anomalous bottom five entering into 2015.

Last up in 2014, Freiburg already knew what they had to do to ensure they did not spend the winter looking up at the rest of the division - only a win would have sufficed.

They were up against a Hannover side who did not want to lose touch with the top six, though, and victory was equally important for them, making for an open and entertaining game at the Dreisamstadion.

Roman Burki in the Freiburg goal was forced to make a series of good saves to keep his side on terms as the Reds peppered their goal, Jimmy Briand going the closest when his header hit the post.

Joselu was next to hit the woodwork for Hannover with 10 minutes of the first half remaining.

Freiburg then snatched the lead on the stroke of half-time, against the run of play, with Frantz connecting with Christian Gunter's cross.

It was the hosts' turn to hit the post just after the interval with Felix Klaus denied before Ron-Robert Zieler prevented Vladimir Darida from netting on the rebound.

Admir Mehmedi tried his luck from long range with Zieler turning the ball onto the crossbar with the woodwork rattling for the fourth time.

Freiburg doubled their lead in the 81st minute when Kempf managed to turn Jonathan Schmid's cross in with his shoulder.

It was not enough for all three points, though, as Hannover first hit back with Bittencourt turning in Lars Stindl's cross before Joselu broke Freiburg hearts deep in stoppage time, pouncing on a mistake by Burki to leave Freiburg rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga for the winter.
