Louis van Gaal last night blasts his side's display at Aston Villa as "the sort which costs you the title."

And the Man United manager wasn't the only boss with something to moan about at Villa Park.

Villa's Paul Lambert hit out at referee Lee Mason's harsh decision to send off Gabby Agbonlahor after a clash with Ashley Young, playing against his former club.

The Midlands club will appeal against the red card but there is nothing Van Gaal can do about these two dropped points.

After the 1-1 draw the United boss admitted: "We haven't gained a point – we have dropped two. We were the better team, I think, and that is frustrating."

"When you want to be part of the title race you have to win these games."

"Falcao scored a beautiful goal and he needed that but we were not good enough and not creative enough to catch a victory. These are the sort of games than can cost you the title."

"I saw the start of Manchester City's game against Palace and they were struggling but they still went on to win the match 3-0."

"When you see today, you would say we are not capable of going on a run to win the title."

FUMING: Louis van Gaal was furious with Manchester United's performance

"But there is a long way to go and we have just won six games in a row prior to this result."

Lambert, meanwhile, said of Agbonlahor's dismissal: "If that's a red card we all might as well pack it up."

"Brad Guzan told me that Young actually admitted that he fouled Gabby – not the other way round."

"So there's a good chance we will lodge an appeal."

"I'm not worried whether Young made a meal of it. It was two men going for the ball and it was never a red card."

"And in the heat of the moment, I don't think Ashley is going to jump up and say 'that's not a red card."

"He's playing for Manchester United."

Van Gaal said of the incident: "I didn't see it and I haven't yet seen a replay of it."
