NO-ONE HAS WON FOUR INTERCONTINENTAL CUPS
At the helm of this record-breaking Real Madrid side, Ancelotti has the chance to add another personal record to his curriculum this Saturday. The Italian has already won three intercontinental trophies and is looking for his fourth in Marrakech - a haul never before achieved.
The manager won two back in his playing days, with Milan in '89 and '90, and another as a coach, also with the 'Rossonero' outfit, in 2007. All three of these titles came under the format of the Intercontinental Cup, and he now has the chance to proclaim himself the king of world football this weekend.
Like Ancelotti, another six players and managers have won the tournament on three occasions. Bianchi has three to his name, all of them from the dugout. Guardiola has done the same, once again as a manager. He could have made it four if he had won the '92 final as a player, but Barcelona lost to Raí's São Paulo.
The most decorated players are Malatrasi, Cafú and Maldini, each with three trophies apiece. Malatrasi won it with Inter (1964 and 1965) and AC Milan (1969). Cafu was crowned champion with São Paulo (1992 and 1993) and Milan (2007). Maldini won his three Intercontinental Cups with Milan (1989, 1990 and 2007).
This means Ancelotti can become the first to win his fourth world title, his second under the Club World Cup brand. It would be his ninth international title as a coach.
Of the current members of the Real Madrid squad, only Casillas, Pepe, Kroos and Ronaldo have won the competition in its different formats.
