Beefed-up police presence for Rayo-Sevilla match

Over 200 riot police were deployed around Vallecas stadium to keep the peace before, during and after what was deemed a high-risk game between Rayo and Sevilla.

The beefed-up security contingent included mounted officers and four Special Intervention Unit groups, who were tasked with preventing anything similar to the scenes of violence witnessed around the Calderón before last Sunday's meeting between Atletico and Deportivo.

Some 21 people have been arrested so far in connection with the shameful brawl that led to the death of Depor ultra Francisco Javier Romero Taboada and which has had far-reaching repercussions throughout Spanish football, including notably the stepping up of security measures.

Two of the main streets leading to Rayo's stadium were partially cordoned off and patrolled by police for Sevilla's visit.

Within the ground itself, in line with the various agreements reached over the past week, a manifesto against violence was read out before the game, the players took to the pitch wearing white shirts featuring an anti-violence slogan and a banner reading "Fans + respect = the football experience" was unfurled on the pitch.

A similarly large police presence was also visible for Valencia's cup visit to Vallecas on Thursday.
