DISGRACED: Ched Evans was convicted of rape and dropped by his club Sheffield United

Online rumours suggest the only place left for the striker in the UK is the Lancashire club - whose chairman and manager are both battling race storms.

Evans was last week dumped by Sheffield United when the club U-turned on its offer to allow him to train with them.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, 78, is being investigated by the FA after making allegedly racist comments about Chinese and Jewish people during an interview.

That followed his decision to employ manager Malky Mackay, 42, who is said to have sent a string of racist texts while boss at Cardiff City.

Now fans claim Wigan plans to sign shamed Evans in a bid to deflect attention away from the row surrounding its two chiefs.

The 25-year-old was released from jail last month after serving half his five year jail term for the sex attack on a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room.

He is now without a club and desperate to resurrect his career, with many on Twitter claiming Wigan would be the best place for him.

One user wrote: “With the way things are going I wouldn’t be surprised if Wigan signed Ched Evans.”

Another said: “Would anyone actually be surprised if Wigan actually signed Ched Evans? I actually wouldn’t.”

While one fan posted: “If people are laying into Dave Whelan now, wait until Ched Evans signs for Wigan next month.”

It has previously been claimed that Evans may jet abroad to restart his career.

But as he is still on licence for another two-and-a-half years for his crime, he would need special permission as he is not allowed to travel.

It means the Welshman is likely to accept any future he has in the game lies in English football, despite the huge public backlash when united briefly allowed him to train with them.
