JACK WILSHERE has vowed to fight his way back to fitness after undergoing ankle surgery.

The England midfielder will be out for at least three months after yesterday's operation.

Wilshere was clattered into by Manchester United's Paddy McNair during the Gunners' 2-1 home defeat on Saturday.

Yesterday the 22-year-old had a successful operation on his left ankle, but the fresh setback is a huge blow for Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Wilshere insists he will bounce back in the New Year though.

"Ankle needed surgery in the end, went well thanks to the main man James Calder," said Wilshere.

"Work hard for what you want because it won't come to you without a fight.

"You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you put your mind to.

"If somebody puts you down or criticises you, just keep on believing in yourself and turn it into something positive."

Wenger has also been hit by the loss of skipper Mikel Arteta with a recurrence of a calf strain during Wednesday's 2-0 Champions League defeat of Borussia Dortmund.

The Spanish midfielder, 32, is set to be out of action for at least two weeks, according to the club.

However, the last time he suffered a calf strain in September it led to an absence of a month.

There was better news about striker Yaya Sanogo, who opened his Arsenal scoring account against Dortmund, but had to go off with a hamstring problem.

The France starlet is expected to train today prior to tomorrow's visit to West Brom.

Wenger is also hopeful England hitman Danny Welbeck's knee issue, which kept him out in midweek, will not stop him from being available for the trip to the Hawthorns.

Wednesday's win booked Arsenal's place in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the 15th year in a row.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey said: "It is a great achievement, all credit to the manager and players in those 15 years.

"We are through now and hopefully we can have a very successful Champions League."
