VfB Stuttgart 0 : 1 Augsburg - Verhaegh effort enough for Augsburg

Stuttgart were left rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga amid a chorus of jeers at the Mercedes-Benz Arena following a 1-0 defeat at home to Augsburg.

After losing Daniel Schwaab to a controversial red card, Stuttgart lost the game to a debatable penalty with Augsburg captain Paul Verhaegh netting the only goal of the game.

The win lifts Augsburg above Schalke into the top six, leaving Stuttgart at rock bottom with nine points from 12 games of the season and turning up the heat on their coach Armin Veh.

Veh had called on his players to show the characteristics that are needed in a relegation battle and he was not to be disappointed either.

They showed the grit, guile and determination needed to fight their way out of danger, but their hopes of being successful were dashed as early as the 27th minute when Schwaab was shown his second yellow card.

The Stuttgart defender could not believe it when referee Thorsten Kinhofer brandished red for a tackle on Hamit Altintop.

All Stuttgart's best-laid plans were effectively dashed and Augsburg were left with over an hour to let their extra man count against a side whose confidence levels were already low.

Raul Bobadilla wasted their first chance minutes later, forcing a fine save out of Sven Ulreich in the Stuttgart goal.

As a result of the red card, Daniel Ginczek's debut in the Stuttgart attack was ended after only half an hour with Veh bringing Florian Klein on to strengthen his defence in what had become a salvage operation.

Stuttgart did nearly snatch the lead early in the second half when Moritz Leitner's diving header was blocked by Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker.

The hosts did their best to make a game of it, but the next setback came in the 72nd minute when Bobadilla's cross struck Adam Hlousek on an arm he was desperately trying to move out of the ball's way.

Kinhofer pointed to the spot and Verhaegh sent Ulreich the long way to put Augsburg in front.

With little more to lose, Veh threw caution to the wind with two attacking changes, Timo Werner and Sercan Sararer entering the fray, but Augsburg were now in control of the game and not going to let their lead slip.
