Cech would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal, claims ex-Chelsea star

Signing Petr Cech from Chelsea would represent an excellent piece of business for Arsenal, believes former Blues goalkeeper Mark Bosnich.

After a decade as their No.1, the Czech star is reportedly unhappy at having to make do with a spot on the bench and the odd cup game in west London, after being displaced by brilliant Belgian shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois.

Rumours are circulating the Gunners are willing to offer £7million for the 32-year-old and Bosnich believes it would represent a major coup should Arsene Wenger land a player of such quality.

"Petr Cech has been one of the greatest goalkeepers in Premier League history and he's a winner as well," he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast. "I think it would be a fantastic signing for Arsenal."

"From a Chelsea point of view it's very difficult because he's been such a great servant. He didn't particularly do anything wrong last year to warrant losing his place at the start of this season. When a player has been that good a servant for you over all those years and, bearing in mind Chelsea's position, it would be very difficult to stop him leaving to one of your great rivals.

"If the points difference was much closer between them, and Arsenal were showing signs they could go on and win the title, I definitely don't think they would sell him. In this situation though, I think they would."

But Bosnich has insisted Wojciech Szczesny, Arsenal's current first choice between the sticks, shouldn't fret about losing his position immediately if Cech arrives at the Emirates.

"Put it this way, it will either be the making or the breaking of him. As a player, when we look back we think maybe we played our best when we did have competition. At the time you think that when someone comes in for your position, 'did you have to do that', but it depends on his [Wojciech Szczesny's] trust in the manager."

"Does he really trust his manager to give them both a fair crack? If he does he should accept it but it's easier said than done. He just has to make sure he performs week in and week out."

"Even if Cech comes he will still stay in the side unless he's having a bad time. [He needs to] keep on his toes, that's the best thing to do."

"The last thing he needs to do is lose the plot and say he wants to go here and he wants to go there because, with someone like Cech behind him, Wenger will probably say, 'if that's the way you feel then you can go'."
