Santos celebrated the 45th anniversary of Pele’s 1000th career goal today.
The Brazilian is widely regarded as one of the best players, if not the best player, of all time. His goal tally is cause for some debate.
Romario has been met with stifled laughter whenever he claims he scored 1000 goals because he counts exhibition matches and goals against friends in games of FIFA. But, despite winning three World Cups, Pele wasn’t playing opponents of a very high quality from week-to-week.
The milestone is a bit of an odd one to celebrate. 45 years. Why is that special? Well, one reason is that Pele is old and, according to recent stories, not in the best of health.
In this feature, he claims he could have scored 2000 goals if he was playing in the modern game and that he may have actually made more goals than he scored.
