Peterborough United 2 : 1 Carlisle - Burgess sends Posh through
Posted Sunday, November 09, 2014 by PA
Christian Burgess headed in a stoppage-time winner as Peterborough came from behind to beat League Two Carlisle 2-1.
Burgess struck late in both halves to cancel out Derek Asamoah's third goal in four matches for his new side.
Carlisle, with three defeats in their last four matches, took the lead on eight minutes thanks to a defensive mix-up.
Posh's Michael Bostwick headed the ball towards his own goal, but team-mates Ricardo Santos stood still and Michael Smith failed to clear, allowing Asamoah to nip in and lob goalkeeper Ben Alnwick.
The visitors should have scored again, but when Santos missed his header from Matty Robson's left-wing free-kick, Courtney Meppen-Walter fired wide from close range.
Carlisle were punished three minutes before the break as Burgess rose highest to head in Joe Newell's right-wing corner.
Both sides pushed for a winner in the second period and, just when it appeared the tie was heading to a replay, Burgess got on the end of Smith's right-wing cross to loop a header over Dan Hanford and end his side's run of three straight defeats.
