ARSENAL will rival Manchester United for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar in January.

Arsenal are set to rival Manchester United for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar in January.

Vlaar is out of contract next summer, prompting speculation that Paul Lambert is set to cash in during the winter transfer window.

The Gunners have a mini-defensive crisis on their hands with fringe full-back Nacho Monreal currently covering in central defence.

Sensational reports in Spain suggest Real Madrid would be willing to sell Gareth Bale to Manchester United, if Angel Di Maria is thrown into the deal.

The Red Devils have been linked with a £90m move for Bale but Carlo Ancelotti is keen to keep the Welsh winger.

However, Spanish paper El Econamista reckons an unlikely Di Maria plus cash offer could bring Bale to Old Trafford.

JANUARY MOVE: Arsenal are reportedly set to rival Manchester United for Ron Vlaar in the winter transfer window.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have all been handed a boost in the chase for Bayern Munich winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

German club Schalke have been linked with a move for him in recent weeks but sporting director Horst Heldt has played down the transfer talk.

He is quoted by Sportsbild saying: "He is a great player, but we are sufficiently well staffed for wingers. A move would make no sense."

QPR boss Harry Redknapp wants to sign Jermain Defoe.

Redknapp gave Defoe his debut at West Ham and signed him for Portsmouth and Tottenham and he is desperate to be reunited with him once again.

MLS side Toronto could demand up to £10m for his services in January while his £90,000-a-week wages could prove a stumbling block.
