Cheltenham Town 0 : 1 York City - De Girolamo denies Robins

Diego De Girolamo scored the first-half goal to secure only York's second win of the season at the expense of Cheltenham.

The Italian Under-20s striker, on loan from Sheffield United, netted a 43rd-minute strike to reward an excellent first-half performance before the Minsterman had to withstand Cheltenham's second-half rally at Whaddon Road.

It was a smart finish too from De Girolamo, who took a neat pass from Michael Coulson into his stride just inside the penalty area and then steered a low left-footed shot past keeper Trevor Carson.

De Girolamo had earlier been denied by the woodwork, smashing a shot against the post and clipped another smart effort inches wide, as York dominated the first period.

Deon Burton, making his York debut on loan from Scunthorpe, volleyed over from close-range and also sent a header high while the dangerous Coulson fired just wide.

However, the Robins, sparked by half-time substitute Eusebio Bancessi, livened up considerably after the break.

Terry Gornell should have equalised in the 74th minute, only to direct a free header from Raffaele De Vita's right-wing cross wastefully wide of the target.

Then York goalkeeper Aleksander Cisak rescued his side to parry an excellent shot on the turn from Byron Harrison and then keep out another instinctive strike from the Robins substitute three minutes from time.
