MANUEL PELLEGRINI has taunted Manchester United by insisting they haven't improved under new boss Louis Van Gaal.

MIND GAMES: Manuel Pellegrini has fanned the flames ahead of the Manchester derby by taunting Manchester United

The fallen giants spent almost £160m on new signings in the summer in a bid to get back to the top again.

But despite bringing in Van Gaal and luring the likes of Luke Shaw, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao to Old Trafford, Pellegrini reckons his neighbours are no better off now than when David Moyes was in charge.

United have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season and have one point less than they did at this stage last year.

Pellegrini has fanned the flames ahead of Sunday's crunch derby showdown at the Etihad by taunting his bitter rivals.

When asked if United were stronger the Manchester City boss said: "Similar. I think that both teams are similar.

"I think Manchester United bought very important players this year. I think also they are at the moment where you start with a new manager and new players, which is not easy.

"Maybe the same thing happened with me last year, so I think they (United) are in a similar moment."

Pellegrini is feeling the heat ahead of United's visit, having seen his champions go three games without a win and get dumped out of the Capital One Cup by Newcastle this week.

To make matters worse, the big-spenders will now be without Spanish sensation David Silva for up to a month with strained knee ligaments.

But Pellegrini insists he never feels pressure and is convinced his side will turn things round.

He reckons it is soon to judge his men and he added: "I don't know what pressure is.

"I think it's very difficult to analyse the season at this moment when you are only in October and you have only played nine games in the Premier League.

"Also, when you don't know whether you are going to qualify or not qualify in the Champions League.

"It's a reality that we are eliminated from the Capital One. Maybe last year we were the only ones who were not eliminated from the Capital One, so the other teams will have more difficulties than us this season because they have more games."
