Werder Bremen vs Cologne preview

Werder Bremen coach Robin Dutt says there is no alternative for his team but to beat Cologne this Friday night.

The northern Germany side are propping up the Bundesliga and are without a win in their first eight games of the campaign, but Dutt expects their search for those first three points will finally reap a result.

"There's no alternative to winning," Dutt said. "I cannot accept that, after eight games, we still haven't won yet.

"We all owe it to ourselves to get a win at long last.

"The way we have dealt with difficult situations in the past gives me confidence. I put myself under enough pressure to win because we are working so hard and intensively."

That hard work has yet to pay dividends, but forward Nils Petersen has backed Dutt to get things right.

"We're working so tirelessly each week and I'm sure we'll get back on the road to success with this coach," he told Sport1, acknowledging at the same time that the current Bremen side "no longer has the quality we had a few years ago".

Petersen also has a simple recipe for success.

"We've just got to kick the ball into the back of the net," he added.

Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn has proven to be adept at stopping opponents from doing that this season.

The promoted side have one of the five meanest defences in the division, but there is still plenty of room for improvement up front - only Hamburg have scored fewer than Cologne's six goals this season.

Considering Bremen have by far and away the leakiest defence in the division, Friday could be an ideal opportunity for Peter Stoger's men to alter that statistic.

"We see Bremen as a bit chance for us, but just because they've been losing so much recently does not mean it's going to be easy," said Stoger on his club's website.
