Cristiano goes off on 75 minutes to ice his knee

Cristiano Ronaldo looked downcast as he left the pitch at the Stade de France. The Portuguese was replaced by Joao Mario on 75 minutes and he watched the rest of the game from the dugout with an icepack on his left knee. This has become somewhat of a ritual for him at the end of games and training sessions to avoid any swelling.

The Real Madrid forward had a quiet first half, but his performance improved considerably after the break. He fought an entertaining on-pitch battle with his club teammate Varane who blocked the Portuguese's point-blank goal bound shot. The Frenchman had previously used his hand to stop one of the Portuguese's attacking runs, but the match referee failed to spot the infraction.

Cristiano's best chance came just after the break, but an inspired Mandanda save kept his header out and France in the lead.

Substituting Cristiano was seen a precautionary measure by Portugal boss, Fernando Santo ahead of Tuesday's must-win qualifier away to Denmark. Portugal need a win after an unexpected home defeat to Albania in their opening Group 1 qualifying game for Euro 2016.
