Salzburg hit back from a goal down to defeat Europa League Group D minnows Astra Giurgiu 2-1.

The reigning Austrian champions, who began their pool campaign with a 2-2 draw at home to Celtic, fell behind on the quarter of an hour mark on Thursday evening following Takayuki Seto's blistering effort.

But quickfire goals from Kevin Kampl and Jonathan Soriano overturned the deficit and ensured Salzburg would not suffer a shock defeat at the hands of their Romanian opponents.

Following a forgettable opening for both sides, the hosts took the lead thanks to a thunderbolt from Seto, who smashed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area after being teed up by Gabriel Enache in the 15th minute.

Yet the Japanese midfielder's first goal in Europe this season did not spur Salzburg into immediate action with chances at a premium.

Kampl's 30-yard piledriver was saved by Astra goalkeeper Silviu Lung Jr, who was otherwise untested for much of the half until the game came to life in the 36th minute.

Kempl levelled matters, with the Slovenian finishing from close range after being picked out well by Salzburg skipper Soriano.

And the home side were hit with a suckerpunch six minutes later as Soriano himself got on the scoresheet to give his side all the momentum heading into the break.

Last season's top scorer in the Europa League exchanged passes with Brazilian forward Alan in the area before lifting the ball over Lung Jr.

The Romanian goalkeeper, who has been capped three times by his country, kept the deficit to just one goal after the interval by saving well from Alan's header, while Ramalho slammed a shot wide from a decent position.

Their wastefulness was nearly punished as at the other end, Constantin Budescu's strike from just outside the box being tipped around the post by Salzburg custodian Peter Gulacsi.

There was to be no way back for Astra thereafter as Salzburg comfortably held on to take all three points.
