SC Paderborn 07 1 : 2 Monchengladbach - Monchengladbach climb to second

Borussia Monchengladbach moved up to second place in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win at Paderborn which extended their unbeaten start to the season to six matches.

Patrick Herrmann and Raffael gave Monchengladbach an early two-goal lead, in spite of a bright start from the hosts.

Jens Wemmer pulled a goal back for Paderborn and they pushed for an equaliser, but Lucien Favre's men held on to pick up their third win of the season.

Despite losing their first game of the season at Bayern Munich in midweek, Andre Breitenreiter sent his Paderborn players to the Munich beer festival to reward them for their efforts up to Tuesday night.

It appeared to have done the trick too with Paderborn once again showing excellent team spirit and no fear of their illustrious opponents.

Yet Herrmann put the visitors ahead against the run of play with Gladbach's first attack of the match.

Branimir Hrgota was sent on his way by Ibrahima Traore and he squared for Herrmann to turn the ball in before Paderborn's defenders or goalkeeper knew what had hit them.

Little over five minutes passed and Paderborn were two goals down, Raffael this time turning the ball in after Lukas Kruse saved his initial header.

The game was transformed as a result, with all of the confidence sucked out of Paderborn and the visitors taking full control of the game.

For all their possession, though, Lucien Favre's men did not seem all that desperate to do much with it and turn the screw, leaving Paderborn with a glimmer of hope which became more than that with 20 minutes remaining.

Moritz Stoppelkamp beat Oscar Wendt down the right and crossed for Wemmer to volley in to set up a grandstand finish.

Yann Sommer earned his wage for the day with a succession of saves as the hosts attacked incessantly, without being able to find a way through.
