Hellas Verona 2 : 1 Palermo - Pisano mistake hands Verona victory

A defensive blunder by Palermo handed Hellas Verona victory on Monday night at the Marc' Antonio Bentegodi stadium.

An own goal from Eros Pisano 13 minutes from time gave the hosts a 2-1 triumph - their first victory of the season.

Franco Vazquez had put the Sicilian outfit ahead in the 18th minute before former Palermo striker Luca Toni equalised from the penalty spot before half-time.

With Palermo looking more dangerous, a misunderstanding between defender Pisano and goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino gifted Hellas the winner.

Both sides went into the encounter in Verona on the back of draws in their Serie A openers.

Hellas coach Andrea Mandorlini left new signing Javier Saviola on the bench and opted instead to play Lazaros Christodoulopoulos alongside Juan Gomez and Toni in attack.

Paulo Dybala threatened in the ninth minute when he drilled a left-footed shot from 30 yards that was kept out by Hellas goalkeeper Rafael.

Palermo then broke the deadlock.

Rafael failed to hold on to Francesco Bolzoni's effort and Vazquez tapped in the rebound to put his team ahead.

The hosts almost pulled level in the 33rd minute but Vangelis Moras' powerful header from Christodoulopoulos' cross was saved by Palermo's Sorrentino.

The home side earned a penalty in the 41st minute when Sinisa Andjelkovic brought down Toni inside the area.

Toni took the penalty and hit the ball towards the far post and out of Sorrentino's reach.

Hellas picked up where they left off after the re-start and in the 50th minute, Sorrentino had to intervene to clear Panagiotis Tachtsidis' hard drive from outside the area.

Palermo should have gone in front in the 57th minute when Vazquez set up Paulo Barreto in the box, but the midfielder's six-yard effort did not trouble Rafael.

On the hour mark, the home fans appealed for a penalty after Toni fell in the box with Sorrentino close by. The referee waved play on.

Palermo grew in confidence and long-range attempts from both Dybala and Barreto went just wide.

The home side finally went in front when Pisano and Sorrentino failed to clear a ball. Gomez pounced and his shot was deflected into the back of the net by Pisano.

Hellas defended deeply and held on to collect all three points.
