Debut drama for Xabi as Bayern are held

Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw away at Schalke in their second league fixture of the season, which was headlined by the debut of Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso just a day after he sealed his shock switch from Real Madrid.
Robert Lewandowski fired into an empty net to give the Bundesliga and German Cup champions the lead after 10 minutes, but defender Benedikt Höwedes levelled just after the hour mark.
The equaliser was not without a dollop of controversy, as the ball seemed to ricochet home off Höwedes's hand after Xabi's despairing attempt to clear, but referee Marco Fritz awarded the goal despite the Bayern players' angry protests.
Bayern currently sit in fifth place in the Bundesliga table, with Bayer Leverkusen the early pace-setters.
