Schalke 04 1 : 1 Bayern Munich - Bayern slip up at Schalke

Bayern Munich dropped their first points of the season while Schalke picked up their first in a 1-1 draw at the Arena AufSchalke on Saturday.

Xabi Alonso made his Bayern debut and Robert Lewandowski scored his first goal in the Bundesliga for the Bavarians to put them in front after only 10 minutes.

Bayern tired as the game wore on, though, and Benedikt Howedes, one of seven World Cup winners on the field, levelled after an hour to relieve some of the pressure mounting on coach Jens Keller after back-to-back defeats.

Bayer coach Pep Guardiola fielded new signing Alonso in his starting XI just 24 hours after he officially became a Bayern player, while Xherdan Shaqiri replaced the injured Arjen Robben.

The Spaniard appeared to slot in well to his new surroundings and he was one of Bayern's most active players in a bright opening from the guests.

Ralf Fahrmann came to Schalke's rescue in just the third minute when he made an instinctive save to deny Thomas Muller from close range after Lewandowski's pass cut through the Schalke rearguard.

Schalke's defence was torn apart once again in the 10th minute, this time with devastating consequences.

Sebastian Rode exchanged passes with Lewandowski before leaving the ball on a plate for the Poland international to score from close range.

There was little coming from Schalke in an attacking sense with a Sidney Sam shot wide of the post sparking them into life after half an hour's play.

Just before the break, Manuel Neuer raced 40 yards off his line, but a bad clearance gave the ball to Kaan Ayhan. His shot from just inside the Bayern half missed the target, however.

Schalke improved in the second half with a Julian Draxler header saved by Neuer before Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting was put through, but the former Mainz forward took too long and Jerome Boateng raced across to dispossess him.

The hosts' pressure finally paid off when they levelled in the 62nd minute.

Alonso turned a Choupo-Moting effort off the goal-line but it was against the thigh and then arm of Howedes, but Bayern's protests were waved away after the ball ricocheted in.

Schalke had built up a head of steam and Choupo-Moting tested Neuer soon after, but they too appeared to run out of energy with the final 10 minutes riddled by mistakes on both sides, but neither could capitalise to snatch the win.
