Rennes got their Ligue 1 campaign up and running with a stylish 6-2 rout of Evian on Saturday night.

Ola Toivonen, Mexer and Paul-Georges Ntep shared the goals as the hosts fashioned the perfect response to their defeat against Lyon on the opening weekend of the season.

Daniel Wass replied twice for Evian but they have yet to register a point and face the daunting prospect of a meeting with defending champions Paris St Germain in their next league fixture.

Rennes had their noses in front after just seven minutes at the Stade de la Route de Lorient. Sanjin Prcic's corner found Pedro Henrique, who headed the ball into the path of Toivonen to gift the Sweden international an easy finish from close range.

Wass managed to level things up 10 minutes before the interval, heading a Nicolas Benezet corner past a stranded Benoit Costil.

However, two goals in four minutes put the home side in the driving seat before the interval.

Romain Danze teed up Mexer to volley in after 40 minutes and the Mozambique defender found the target again soon after, rising to meet another dangerous corner from Prcic to head beyond visiting goalkeeper Jesper Hansen.

A fourth goal followed after 57 minutes, with Toivonen making the most of some lapse defending to turn in Danze's neat assist.

And substitute Ntep added his name to the scoresheet after 76 minutes with a wonderful solo effort, picking up the ball in midfield before powering his way into the area and slipping a shot beyond Hansen.

Evian managed to numb some of the pain with a second goal from Wass eight minutes from time, but Ntep's finish in the top right corner with three minutes remaining rounded off a night to remember for Rennes.
