CENTRAL FIGURE: Chambers will be played in the middle

The Gunners' £12m signing is being tipped as a future England star.

Chambers, 19, played right-back at previous club Southampton and made his Arsenal debut at centre-half at the weekend.

The Arsenal boss has been so impressed with the youngster's adaptability that he is weighing up handing him the key holding midfield role for the new season.

Wenger has been linked with moves for Bayern Munich's Sami Khedira and Sporting Lisbon's William Carvalho.

But he is understood to be coming round to the idea of using Chambers in the middle, where he could feature against Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley on Sunday.

The Frenchman has had some success finding new positions for his players and has been hugely impressed by Chambers' versatility and the instant way he has settled at the club following his surprise big-money move.

Chambers also impressed in the Emirates Cup games against Benfica and Monaco.

Wenger said: "Chambers played very well over the two games and at 19 was not phased by the quality of the opponents and by it being his first time at The Emirates. He was one of the satisfactions of weekend."

"He can play central midfield as well as he has good technique, great mobility and is a good good distance runner. It is where I can have a look at him."

"He was educated as central midfielder and then played with England under-19 at centre-back and right-back for Southampton and that is where I saw him the first time against us and I liked him."

"At the end of the season he did not play much for Southampton but I made my mind to buy him after I saw him against us."
