FELL GUY: Fellaini could be on his way out of Old Trafford after just one season

The Italian giants have opened talks with Fellaini about a move to the Serie A outfit ahead of the new season.

It is understood Napoli bosses want to take Fellaini on loan for 12 months with a view to making the deal permanent for around £18m, while Lazio are also interested in the midfielder.

New United boss Louis van Gaal has promised to look at all members of his squad before deciding which ones to let go.

But Starsport understands the Dutchman is keen to axe Fellaini along with Shinji Kagawa, Nani and Anderson as he shakes up his midfield options

Belgium flop Fellaini has been a huge disappointment at Old Trafford and is keen to find a new challenge elsewhere.

Fellaini cost United £27.5m when he joined them from Everton just an hour before last summer's transfer window closed.

He was United's only significant signing of the close season and was expected to be a big success under former boss David Moyes.

But he struggled to make an impact and ended up losing his place in the team while making just 16 Premier League appearances.

Moyes was then sacked after just 10 months in charge to leave Fellaini in limbo and even more doubts about his long term future at the fallen giants.

But now it seems Napoli boss Rafa Benitez is keen to offer Fellaini a lifeline and the chance to rebuild his career in Serie A.

Fellaini was spotted holding talks with Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon and his agent at the Sheraton Hotel at Brussel's Airport at the weekend in a bid to push a deal through.

Bigon has offered Benitez cash to spend on new signings in the hope of making Napoli a genuine force in Serie A again.

United supporters will not be sad to see the back of Fellaini, who became a scapegoat for the team's failings last season.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy claim United are poised to make a £48m bid for Juventus ace Arturo Vidal.

United chief executive Ed Woodward has strongly denied suggestions the Chile star is a genuine target.

But rumours of a deal refuse to go away and Italian sources claim United are willing to double his wages in the hope of luring Vidal to Old Trafford as a possible replacement for Fellaini.
