The Frenchman stresses his gratitude to 'Los Che' but says that he is keen to embark on a new challenge: "I am not hiding the fact that this would be a step forward in my career; it is a reward for my hard work and efforts and is a unique opportunity that any player would jump at".
"I joined Valencia on a free transfer five years ago and this deal would benefit all parties involved. I think the time has come to take the next step in my career and to close the page on my chapter at a club that I will always have in my heart and to which I will be eternally grateful whatever happens", the statement continues.
"I ask Valencia and their president, Amadeo Salvo, to understand my situation and negotiate a deal. I have the chance to play for the biggest club in the world and that's all I want right now, though I will never forget everything Valencia have done for me", the centre-back adds.
Mathieu also claims that Salvo had promised not to stand in his way if a good opportunity arose: "When I renewed my contract at Valencia last season, the president promised he would let me leave if a good offer came in for me, which is the case now".
