Arsenal line up €40m Alexis Sanchez bid

Arsene Wenger believes the Barcelona forward can be developed into a front man, but the Gunners must convince the Chile international to move to the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal will make a €40 million bid for Alexis Sanchez after identifying the Barcelona and Chile star as their No.1 forward target this summer, Goal can reveal.

Sanchez, whose World Cup is over after Chile were defeated on Saturday night by Brazil on penalties, is set to be sold by Barca this summer as they overhaul their squad following a disappointing season.

Sanchez is also attracting strong interest from Liverpool, Manchester United and Juventus.

The 25-year-old is a player in demand after a series of outstanding World Cup displays and a season in which his 21 club goals were bettered at Camp Nou only by Lionel Messi.

Goal revealed last month that Arsenal had sent a delegation to Madrid to hold talks with a mystery forward, who it is now understood to have been Sanchez.

The Gunners have been closely pursuing the forward over the last few weeks and the seriousness of Arsenal's pursuit is demonstrated by the fact that both chief executive Ivan Gazidis and contract negotiator Dicky Law were involved in the negotiations in Madrid.

Arsene Wenger and his scouts believe Sanchez has the attributes to be developed into a centre-forward at Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal need to convince Sanchez to choose a move to north London ahead of the other clubs competing for his signature.

The Gunners' top priority this summer is to clinch the signing of an elite forward who can provide competition next season for Olivier Giroud, the only senior striker at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal tried to sign Julian Draxler in a €37m deal in January and failed with moves for Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Wayne Rooney last summer, as well as a last-ditch loan bid for Demba Ba.

The Londoners are also working on deals to sign Toulouse right-back Serge Aurier and Cardiff City goalkeeper David Marshall.
