Tottenham winger Andros Townsend will miss 10 weeks of action because of an ankle injury, ruling him out of England's FIFA World Cup campaign.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury in Saturday's 1-0 win at Stoke City and left the Britannia Stadium wearing a protective boot.

Townsend had an MRI scan Monday before additional tests Tuesday revealed the full extent of the injury, and the youngster is now set to miss out on the tournament in Brazil later this year.

"Following further examination and consultation, Andros Townsend is to undergo surgery on his left ankle on Thursday (tomorrow) after damaging ligaments during our fixture against Stoke City last Saturday," a club statement read. "The injury is likely to sideline the young winger for up to 10 weeks."

Townsend's absence is a further blow to England manager Roy Hodgson who is also without Arsenal winger Theo Walcott, who ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee playing against Tottenham in the FA Cup in January.

Hodgson handed Townsend his England debut in their penultimate UEFA Group H qualifying fixture with Montenegro, in which he played a starring role by scoring in a 4-1 win.

He also impressed in the final pool encounter with Poland - a 2-0 triumph that ensured England's participation in Brazil.

Townsend has been a regular for Tim Sherwood's men this season and has scored once in 25 Premier League appearances.
