SIR ALEX FERGUSON risks facing the wrath of Manchester United fans again after ordering a stunning kit change.

BLUE BOYS: RVP, Rooney and Mata in Fergie's proposed United kit

Fed up with the defeats and unable to influence the team like he once could, Fergie has put incredible plans on the boardroom table to change fortunes at Old Trafford.

His proposals involve United ditching their famous red strip and instead playing in SKY BLUE, just like fierce rivals City.

Fergie is understood to have been mulling over his plans for a while.

He fears that part of the reason top United stars cannot pass to one another is because of the kit colour.

And unable to watch his beloved club struggle anymore, he's taken matters into his own hands.

Ferguson logged on to his computer at midnight this morning to file his plans via e-mail to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

He is now awaiting an answer.

The news is expected to be met by fierce opposition from United fans groups.

City have played in sky blue since the club's inception in 1894.

United, meanwhile, traditionally play in red.

Old Trafford chiefs signed a £300m kit deal with Nike last year but they are now set to hold talks over a colour change.

Sir Alex watched Peterborough - managed by son Darren - win the Johnstones Paint Trophy on Sunday.

The Posh are challenging at the top end of League One and look set to at least reach the play-offs.

Their home kit is blue and made by Nike, leading Fergie to believe that that could be the future.

Cardiff made a similar move back in 2012, ditching their blue strip for a red one after being taken over by Vincent Tan.

The switch angered many Bluebirds fans who have called on the club to return back to their roots.

United fans, who are among the most passionate in the country, are expected to meet the proposals with similar opposition.
