PEP TALK: Ferguson and Guardiola are close friends

Guardiola is a close friend of Fergie's and spent some time with him in New York last year discussing his future after quitting Barcelona.

The Spaniard went out for dinner with Fergie but struggled to understand the Scot's accent, before opting to become Bayern Munich boss.

Guardiola, whose Champions League holders will face United at Old Trafford tonight in the first leg of their quarter final, said: "He invited me to a super restaurant. We spent a very good time together but my English is not so good.

"It was a friendly dinner, like always he has with me. He was so gentle and we spent a very good time together."

Instead of choosing Guardiola or Jose Mourinho, United opted for David Moyes. But the Premier League champions have struggled under his leadership this season.

The fallen giants go into this clash as strong underdogs due to a woeful campaign that has seen them slump to seventh in the table.

But Guardiola insists United remain a huge force in Europe and that his German champions cannot afford to underestimate them.

He added: "We play against Manchester United, one of the most important clubs in the world regardless of the situation this year.

"Look at the last 10 or 15 years under Sir Alex Ferguson. They have good players. It is a great honour for me to be back in Manchester after 20 years and I hope to play a good game.

"Last season Bayern won everything and this season we were 25 points ahead of our opponents, so we won the title seven games early.

"But I know in my heart which team we are going to play against. Maybe they haven't had a good season in the Premier League but when I see players like Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Danny Welbeck, I know these are very good players.

"Maybe they did not play well in the Premier League, I don't know why, but over one game or two games they can beat us."
