MANCHESTER CITY have set aside £50million to spend on the best of young BRITISH talent.

ETIHAD TARGET: Kid Shaw

That puts England kids Ross Barkley at Everton and Southampton’s Luke Shaw in the City frame for the summer.

There is concern at The Etihad Stadium about the number of home-grown players there will be in their squad for the start of next season.

Premier League squads must include eight in a 25-man pool.

And City could lose some they already have, like defender Micah Richards, who didn’t even make the bench for the Capital One Cup Final.Manchester City to battle Manchester United for £50m Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley

Midfielder Jack Rodwell, who may return to Everton on a season’s loan, is another one.

Gareth Barry, already on a temporary transfer to Everton, is unlikely to be back at The Etihad next season and fellow England international Joleon Lescott has already said he will be leaving.

City did not have one British player in their startling line-up at Wembley last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Goodison midfielder Barkley, 20, has been on City’s radar for some time.

And Southampton left-back Shaw, who made his England debut last week at the age of 18, is the most-wanted young player in the country.

GOING ENGLISH: Manuel Pellegrini is looking to bring young English talent to the Etihad

City boss Manuel Pellegrini, preparing for today’s FA Cup tie against Watford, is aware that he would face fierce competition for Shaw.

The Saints starlet is a priority target for Chelsea and City’s neighbours Manchester United.

As revealed in the Daily Star Sunday last month, United boss David Moyes wants two new full-backs as he rebuilds the ageing United team.

And Shaw, who started out at the famed Southampton Academy ten years ago, is very much a target for the left-back role at Old Trafford.
