PLAYING OUT OF POSITION: Manchester United legend Gordon Hill can't understand why David Moyes is playing Juan Mata on the left wing

Under-fire Manchester United chief Moyes has played Mata, a £37.1million capture from Chelsea, out wide since his arrival in January.

But Old Trafford legend Gordon Hill has told Moyes to stop playing Mata, 25, on the flanks and let him flourish in a more central role.

United favourite Hill, who made 134 appearances for the club from 1975 to 1978, said: “I can’t understand why Juan Mata is playing on the left wing.

“This little guy is playing all over the place at the moment.

NOT A WINGER: Juan Mata should be playing in the middle according to Hill

Manchester United legend Gordon Hill isn't happy that Juan Mata is playing on the wing“He is lost in games, roaming, not picking up players and gettingcaught with the ball when he has it – it is not his best position.” Spaniard Mata shone at Chelsea in his time there, often playing through the middle behind the frontman.

And Hill added: “I fear he is going to be put in a position where he is not going to put anything into the game.

“He is going to be out there on the wing and not able to contribute anything to the game.

“At Chelsea, Mata was a busy little player who could create things. He’s like a square peg in a round hole at the moment.

“He is a pest and is great at delivering those little balls in and around the box – but he looks out of place at the moment.”
