Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to add to his squad, especially after midfielder Lucas Leiva was ruled out for up to two months with a knee injury picked up in Saturday's draw with Aston Villa. Liverpool enter talks to sign Norway international Valon Berisha

Liverpool representatives were in the crowd to watch Berisha in action during Salzburg's 3-0 friendly win against Champions League holders Bayern Munich at the weekend.

Berisha, 20, has been on the Reds radar for while now and was scouted last month, impressing in the 4-0 league victory over Austria Wien.

According to reports in Norway, Liverpool are hoping to secure a deal to land the midfielder and could be boosted in their pursuit by former manager Gerard Houllier.

Houllier, who was in charge of the club from 1998 to 2004, is currently Salzburg's global sports director and may be able to convince the club to part with the Norway international for the right price.

Berisha is rated at £2.5m by Salzburg and would provide Rodgers with a cheaper alternative to the possible addition of AC Milan star Nigel De Jong.

The former Manchester City enforcer has been earmarked as a possible signing.

However Rodgers will face an uphill battle to tempt new Milan boss Clarence Seedorf to part with De Jong, with the Dutchman keen to keep his compatriot at the club
