WAYNE ROONEY and Robin van Persie WILL NOT suffer wage cuts if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League.

CASHBACK: Rooney and RVP will still be earning big bucks even if Utd fail to make next season's Champions League

Some members of the United squad are facing that situation under the terms of their contracts.

But strikers Rooney and Van Persie are protected from cuts through the deals negotiated for them by their representatives.

Both have agreements worth around £250k-a-week and will stay on those terms next season – if they remain at the club – even if United finish outside the top four.

LAST HURRAH? Utd favourite Rooney could seek an exit come the end of the season

But where United finish will have a bearing on the England striker’s thinking.

Rooney, 28, is on a warm-weather rehabilitation break in Egypt to aid his recovery from a groin injury.

And United boss David Moyes is hoping he will be fit to return to the side a week today at Chelsea – the club who will be at the front of the queue if Rooney decides to quit Old Trafford.

Wazza has been told to call time on his career at struggling United and join their London rivals.

WORRIES: Van Persie has had an injury-stricken season reminiscent of his time with Arsenal

Ex-England striker Kevin Phillips believes the Scouse hitman is ready to leave the Red Devils in the summer to join up with Jose Mourinho.

The title-chasing Blues are desperately short of firepower.

And journeyman goal-getter Phillips – released by Crystal Palace last week – says the time is right for Rooney to hook up with the Portuguese manager.

Mourinho tried to lure him to Stamford Bridge last summer and Phillips said: “Wayne has had a fantastic time at United but I think deep down he wants to leave the club.

“Chelsea would be a good fit for him.

“He has been at United a long time, these rumours keep surfacing and there has got to be something in it.

“So maybe the summer is the right time for Wayne to move on and start a new chapter in his career.”
