The form of the Brazil centre-back has been brought into question by the Germany great, who says the defender needs the winter break to recharge and get back to his best

Dante has been dealt a stinging verbal blow after Franz Beckenbauer accused the Bayern Munich defender of failing to live up this performances of last season.

Beckenbauer: Dante was better last season

The centre-back joined the Bavarians from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2012 and enjoyed a dream debut campaign at the Allianz Arena after winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League with the club.

But, despite the fact FCB sit top of the Bundesliga and have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League - where they will face Arsenal in the last-16 - Dante's form has been called into question by the Germany great.

Beckenbauer told Abendzeitung: "He played much better and was much more consistent last season. Now he makes many, many mistakes. Perhaps the winter break will do him good and help him to recover."

Bayern boss Pep Guardiola had an in-depth discussion with Dante ahead of his side's Club World Cup campaign - the Bavarians face Moroccan side Raja Casablanca in Saturday's final - but the 30-year-old is adamant the conversation was purely positive.

Dante said: "It was nothing dramatic. You never argue with the coach because he is they type of person who listens to what you have to say. I'm happy we were able to talk for so long."

Dante has made 24 appearances for the club this season - 20 of which have been starts - having made 44 outings in all competitions in 2012/13.
